Martha Reeves became an unexpected topic of conversation over the weekend, and it wasn't for anything on her Motown résumé.
The 85-year-old singer, best known for hits like "Heat Wave" and "Dancing in the Street," performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" ahead of the Women's Pro Baseball League's inaugural game on Saturday. Video shows people in the crowd visibly laughing partway through, and clips of the performance spread fast, with plenty of viewers piling on once they heard it. Reeves later told TMZ that wet, windy field conditions and a lack of stage monitors kept her from hearing herself as she normally would.
Reeves said she was honored to take part in a historic moment for women's sports regardless of how the anthem landed, and the moment ended up giving the league's launch even more attention than the game itself.
