Fat Bear Week has ended, and Denali National Park and Preserve already has a new weigh-in contest.
Last week, the Alaska park declared "Chunky Puppy Day" and weighed its four 6-month-old Alaskan husky puppies to see which had grown the heaviest. Mammoth, the only male in the litter, lived up to his name at 77.1 pounds, with Rainier second at 66.7 pounds. The Washington Post reported that Denali streamed the weigh-ins for fans who watch the puppies on a live camera in their outdoor pen.
The camera was set to close Friday as the puppies begin training as sled dogs who will patrol the park. Kennel manager David Tomeo said the rambunctious behavior is a promising sign, and he expects Chunky Puppy Day to become an annual event if there is another litter next year.
