Dolphins Launch Themselves Out of the Ocean in Wild Whale-Watching Video Off Orange County

Orange County whale watchers got an airshow they did not book.

Video posted to Instagram by the account @planetwhale shows two bottlenose dolphins rocketing out of the Pacific repeatedly in front of a boat, clearing the surface by what the poster estimated at about 10 feet. The pair were part of a pod of more than 200 dolphins, which the poster called one of the biggest bottlenose pods they had ever seen, and noted that animals that can reach 10 feet long and top 1,000 pounds shouldn't be able to get that much air. Yahoo Lifestyle reported the footage along with the boat full of passengers filming it on their phones.

It's been a busy stretch off the coast, with whale watchers aboard a Newport Landing cruise spotting a pod of 10 to 13 orcas last week, a visit the report tied to warm water from El Niño.
