An elderly man in British Columbia had no idea how close he was to a wild animal until strangers across the street started shouting.
Video shows the man shuffling down a sidewalk while a large black bear trails just feet behind him, seemingly unnoticed until bystanders begin waving and yelling to get his attention. The clip was posted on Instagram and has racked up more than 35 million views. Once he realized what was happening, the man turned, spotted the bear, and quickly picked up his pace toward safety.
The bear eventually turned and moved away, and the man made it home without further incident, closing out one of the more nerve-wracking near-misses to go viral this year.
