Two nights before the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, New York Harbor was transformed into a living memorial.
A display called "2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor" sent that many drones into the sky, one for every person killed in the attacks, before they assembled into the full-scale outline of the Twin Towers. The installation was developed with members of the 9/11 community, including family members, survivors and first responders, and was set to music from composers Philip Glass, John Adams and Max Richter. It stood alongside the city's long-running Tribute in Light beams rather than replacing them.
Major funding came from private donors and the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund, established by the financial firm that lost 658 employees, more than a quarter of its workforce, when its North Tower offices were struck on September 11, 2001.
